Vic Hill Hustles to Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series Victory at Volunteer Speedway
(BULLS GAP, TENNESSEE) For the fourth time in his career, Vic Hill is a Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series winner! Vic, who hails from nearby Mosheim, Tennessee, defended his home turf to reach victory lane on Saturday night in a Labor Day Weekend shootout at Volunteer Speedway. After timing in third quickest in Group B during the qualifying session, Vic rolled off sixth on the grid in the 40-lap feature event. He then took command from race long leader Cory Hedgecock on a lap 20 restart and led the remainder of the distance to secure his first victory of any kind in seven years.
The veteran engine builder, who only races sparingly at this point in his career, took the checkered flag 1.515 seconds ahead of runner-up Jimmy Owens. The Newport, Tennessee star ran second during the early stages of the contest, got shuffled back a few spots on the lap 20 restart, and rallied back up to grab the runner-up spot on the final circuit. Tenth-starting Forrest Trent climbed to as high as second before rounding out the podium in third. Hard charger Josh Henry picked off ten competitors to place fourth, while Jensen Ford started and finished in the fifth position.
The winning Hill’s #1 CVR Race Car was powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine with sponsorship in part from Puremax Racing Oil, Estes Brothers Construction, and Fastlane Signs & Wraps. Vic not only received the $4,000 first place prize at the Bulls Gap, Tennessee venue, but also claimed an additional $1,000 bonus for winning the SAS main event on four American Racer tires.
“Man it has been such a long time since I’ve put this thing into victory lane,” exclaimed an excited Vic Hill. “Chip Vineyard and CVR Race Cars don’t get the credit (they deserve), but this thing is badass. Man what a race. I want to thank everyone for coming out tonight and helping put this place back on the map. It’s fun when you have a good group of racecars to race against - Jimmy and Cory and all of them, we raced all over this track or at least I did!”
A solid field of 27 Super Late Model competitors were in the pit area on Saturday at Volunteer Speedway for round fifteen of the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Franklin Enterprises. Cory Hedgecock, who debuted a new Longhorn Chassis, laid down the quickest time in MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps. Jimmy Owens then earned Fast Time honors during VP Racing Fuels qualifying prior to Kendall Franklin and Josh Henry collecting wins in the pair of consolation races. Michael Luna and Will Hicks received SAS provisionals to start shotgun on the field in the 40-lap headliner.
The tripleheader holiday weekend for the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series wraps up on Sunday, August 31 at the bad-fast Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tennessee. The 17th edition of the ‘Buddy Rogers Memorial’ will take place at “The Taz” and a $5,000 winner’s check will be up for grabs in the sixteenth event of the season for SAS competitors.
The pit gates will swing open at 4:00pm on Sunday, while the hillside grandstands will start to fill up at 5:00pm. The Drivers Meeting is set for 6:45pm with hot laps to quickly follow. In addition to the Super Late Models on the racing card, the Sportsman ($800 to win), Street Stock ($600 to win), and Classic Car ($600 to win) divisions will also be in action. Plus a huge fireworks display!
Adults will be admitted into the grandstands for $20.00 and into the pits for $40.00. Kids ages 9 and under will be allowed into the stands for FREE, while children ages 12 and under will be admitted into the pit area for $30.00.
